Greeves Silverstone RAS105

250cc 2-stroke racing machine, frame no. 24RAS105

This is the bike on which Tom Phillips won the 250cc ACU Star for Reading sponsor Frank Higley in 1963.

A previous owner writes: “I bought it in 1964 from Eric Stroud, who was responsible for its maintenance, drawing on the experience gathered from his Greeves exploits off-road. I ran it in many club events, culminating in a ride at the 1965 MGP, where I was black flagged off the circuit at Ramsey due to having split the expansion chamber (not unknown on the earlier racers). Finances forced me to part with it in 1966 but I was fortunate to locate it again a few years ago in the hands of Dave Frost, from whom I subsequently bought it back and I now have to build up an engine to get it running again.”

The current owner has recently been in touch. He tells us: “The bike was bought from the previous owner in 2006, and has since been completed and paraded (and crashed, without too much damage!). A silenced exhaust has been made and fitted, although I still have a new, original exhaust to return it to original appearance. It’s a lovely bike to ride.”
