Rare 350cc 2-stroke twin RCA-engined Greeves Hawkstone at auction

I was chatting to Jim Aim at the Pre-65 Motocross Club's scramble at Marks Tey on Sunday, he mentioned he had been to an auction recently where a Greeves Hawkstone fitted with a twin cylinder 350cc 2-stroke engine produced by RCA came up for auction.

He said they wanted £8000(!!!) for it and that it didn't sell, and I have since found a link to the machine online at http://www.cheffins.co.uk/lot/-821061-vintage-0.

Apparently, it is still owned by the original owner and was raced by them in the 60s in the South-East.

The machine is a 1960 model (frame no 60/3399), but Jim said he doesn't recall ever seeing this machine.

I have found some information about the development of this engine at http://www.dolphinengines.co.uk/data/uploads/64.pdf. The engine looks quite odd with the exhausts ports on the outside of the machine.

This is the first time I have heard of RCA, let alone seeing this combination of Greeves and engine before. Is this the result of another experiment carried out by the Greeves comp boys perhaps?

      Thanks, Michael

It was in the H & H auction at Duxford after Cheffins, was bid to £6200 but did not reach reserve (£8k to £9k) see link given by Brian

            I've merged the threads, Mike.

The RCA Greeves scrambler is a special, constructed in period. No factory involvement.

                Hi Mike.

If you want to see what a production RCA-engined scrambler looks like, I know of one fairly "close to home" in Ipswich.

                Let me know.

                All best,

                John
