Greeves' unorthodox trademarks of a cast aluminium beam 'downtube' and rubber-in-torsion leading-link fork proved adaptable to almost all forms of motorcycle from humble commuter, via a succession of highly successful off-roaders, to clubman's road-racer. Greeves' first road-racer, the Silverstone, was introduced for the 1963 season following the success of Reg Everett's converted scrambler. The production bike used a modified 24MDS scrambler frame, narrowed at the rear, and was powered by a Villiers 36A engine fitted with Greeves' own alloy cylinder barrel and head. An Amal GP carburettor and expansion chamber exhaust were standard equipment and the motor produced 31bhp at 7,400rpm. Progressively developed through versions RAS to RFS until 1968, the Silverstone provided many an aspiring star with their first taste of road racing and today remains a popular mount in classic/historic racing's 250 class. This time warp Silverstone was purchased by the vendor over 30 years ago from a gentleman in Edinburgh who advised the current vendor that it was previously raced at Beveridge Park. Dry stored and not started since purchase, it will require recommissioning or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the track. At the time of cataloguing, we were unable to check whether the engine turned over due to the gears not selecting, therefore it is sold strictly as viewed. Offered without documents. It should be noted the engine number has been restamped. Key not required

    Good restoration project. Looks standard
RDS159 - not on the database.

It begs the question why was the engine number altered? There doesn't seem to be anything to gain by doing that. In fact, quite the reverse. It is a bit of a spoiler.

The number also has too many digits. All the ones I have registered only have 3 digits after GPA5 in the 1** series & most are GPA7 numbers

Could they have been unstamped replacement cases, or stamped second hand cases that were over stamped to replicate (although incorrectly) the originals?
          We will probably never know.
It obviously hasn't been raced for yonks as it has Dunlop Traingulars on it which must be at least 40 years old.
For that price it might well finish up as my next project to go with my 24RES

So true. But is is no reserve so guide price is immaterial. Might get for a tenner.

For the sake of clarity the engine number as despatched was GPA7 159

Thanks Phil. Does seem a bit of a conundrum.

tony, I think that way back someone changed the cases. The new number would appear to be mumbo jumbo at best. Either way it wont stop a new owner from rebuilding the engine and bringing the bike back to a running condition. The hammer price will underscore those achieved in the Tony East sale.
