Knowing how some members like to save money this might be of some interest, and look what it can do.
There are certain products that have reached the point of fame where their brand name is commonly used as the generic name for the product. Kleenex, Band-Aid, Jell-O and Scotch tape are a few examples. Another one, maybe not quite as iconic, is WD-40. WD-40 is actually the trademark name of a lubricating spray created ...

    Another good home made product.

Interesting submission, I have been involved with mechanical things all my life and always looked at products that all of us buy and the cost of them. So a few years ago when we were cleaning and servicing our shotguns and rifles I picked up a product that my son was using to clean his guns, it was an aerosol maintenance spray that allegedly did everything and when he told me the price I needed smelling salts to bring me back to reality.
So I started to look for homemade products that could replace the liquid gold and discovered a gun cleaner called "Edds Red" yes its a coincidence but true. So I made up some and started using it, although it was frowned on by both my son and grandson who continued using the liquid gold. One day they were struggling to remove some fouling from a barrel when I suggested my concoction, they tried it and now I have to make it up for them.
"Edds Red" was used in the second wold war for maintenance of firearms etc but is useful as a general cleaner and protector of most things mechanical - comprises of equal quantities of the following - ATF (any type)- WHITE SPIRIT - LAMP OIL - ACETONE. Use it sensibly on most metals - but not on plastics. Look it up in the net it makes interesting reading.

      I love this stuff

I get through loads of this..

I buy mine in a 5 litre can witha refillable spray bottle..

After I clean my bikes I smother the whole bike in the stuff, then just wipe it over with a Terry towel... Keeps them tidy and corrosion free, gets all the oil residue off aswel..

I hate ratty looking bikes..... ( I did not mention Kim )

        WD40 etc....

Hi Scott, and a Happy New Year.

Whilst agreeing that 'dubs' is 'good stuff' for many applications, it's worth mentioning that it can also have a detrimental effect on certain types of plastic. This mainly applies to 'modern' bikes, but in the trade I've seen some of the plastic clips used for wiring/tubing routing actually turn soft and generally go 'weird' with excessive application....

Another excellent alternative that I've used and had no problems with is a Scottoiler product called 'FS365'. Well worth a look for the kind of use you suggest, and I can report excellent results for 'year round' use/corrosion protection. It pays to shop around for a good price, but a little goes a long way in my experience.

Another good product is 'ACF50', but we found in the workshop that the 'over the counter' aerosol version could be a bit problematic in that it could deliver too much oil and the pressure of the spray sent it 'everywhere'....We had a local company at the time that specialised in it's application, and they would only ever apply it to a REALLY clean bike, and used a variety of airguns and airbrushes/compressors in conjunction with masks for things like brake discs etc, with the finer spray being more economical and control-able. It wasn't cheap, but the results were impressive and many owners went for an annual application at service time, but the bike had to be 'surgically' clean for best results.
