    Wassell Carbs

    Here is the link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wassell-6-...e-/39069563345
No experiance myself but from what I have heard the Wassell carbs are good value for money & probably made much better than Amal from Burlin Fuels Systems (ask Rob) I think they are made in China for Wassell who only supply via the trade, not direct. They have a good reputation going back years so I would not think they would market inferior products. China are making leaps & bounds in manufacturing these days with a marked improvement in quality.

Have you considered an Amal from Surrey Cycles? http://surreycycles.com/
The Bantam boys http://www.bsabantamclub.com/forum/b.../new-amal-carb seem to speak highly of them.

I would seriously suggest running your TFS on a Villiers S25. They can be made to run very nicely. My Anglian ran well on one whilst I was awaiting my new Amal and to be honest, I wish I hadn't wasted my money. If I had known what was wrong with the 626 when I fitted it during my rebuild, I could have sorted it out. Hence my carb articles in Leading Link.

        confused.

If Burlen make and sell the original. Wassell sell a Chinese copy. What do Surrey Cycles sell?

Burlen concentric are quite good once you have invested in over a hundred pounds in after market bits, slide, float, needle, float needle, Tec.

You come to appreciate an aluminium bodied Mikuni is actually a good bit of kit.

Good point there Phil I have wondered where they source the parts, presumably from Burlin as they have the manufacturing rights to the Amal name. Surrey Cycles was started by Neville Lewis who used to have a stand at shows & autojumbles, was reckoned to be the expert on Amals, he also used to offer a rebuilding service for customers worn carbs. Neville is (or was) endorsing the Wassell carbs in their advert, he sold out the Surrey Cycles business a few years ago to Mike Johnson (an East Coaster owner) & his wife. Maybe if Mike reads this he will come on board & answer the question.

            Carbs etc.

Hi Simon, and Happy New Year to you and yours.

There's more opinions on Wassell carbs here, in case you haven't seen it; http://www.greeves-riders.org.uk/for...ead.php?t=3275

For what it's worth, Rob's advice mirrors everything I have ever heard about the Villiers carb being a really good choice when well set up, particularly for trials (S25.) Mick Grant even uses one (tweaked, as you'd expect) on his 'trick' Ariel and swears by 'em. There are also companies out there that can re-sleeve a carb body for reasonable cost if it's too worn to use...

Phil makes a good point about Mikuni carbs though, as I'm sure many of the scrambles lads would agree. I guess it comes down to eligability/originality/performance/intended use, as ever.

More on Villiers carbs here; http://www.greeves-riders.org.uk/for...ead.php?t=1188

            And here; http://www.greeves-riders.org.uk/for...ead.php?t=4136

            Hope this helps.

Regs on Carbs could affect choice

Hi Brian, all - not sure what the rules are for classic trials elegibility - (Still waiting for a ride on one of Rob's bikes so I can try it out ) but certainly for Scrambling - although the Mikuni is a better carb on tickover and initial pick up you can only use it for pre74 racing. This is because the Mikuni was out in the early 70's but not before (and indeed Dave Harpur advised later works griffons had them fitted - and in the day a lot of bikes fitted them as after market mods)

The Amal mk 2 - is close - but again only for pre74. For other classic classes - its Amal monoblocs or Concentric 900 series.

This approach I think is correct as you can get parts/replacements or re-valving as indicated in this thread and is in keeping with what was fitted on the bike originally - and in my experience - although you may have to spend a little time tuning - once you have it right you won't notice the difference as you hurtle and bounce towards that bend trying to avoid dangerous Dick !!
