  • Steering head bearings.

Hi out there. Does anyone know if it is possible to get new cup / cone bearings for a Scottish at all? Mine are pitted and before I destroy them trying to get them off I'd like to know if I can replace them. Also is it possible to get taper roller conversions for them?
    Thanks
    Steve

There was a post on this subject not too long ago. I think the new cups and cones can be found, but it can be an interesting challenge to get the old cups out of the frame casting. The casting dimensions were altered to accommodate the taper bearings, so I presume those need more internal space than the previous bearings, so you may be stuck with them, unless someone has practical
    experience of a conversion.

There is no conversion for the earlier frames with ball races , the ball races sat on top of the frame & the later frames were considerably enlarged to take taper rollers inset into the steering head .

You are stuck with what you have .

        bearings

Not strictly true chris, although i don`t want to promote any of his products, a certain mr deal, who i believe owns a little s/hand motorcycle outlet somewhere near chelmsford, was marketing a conversion kit to adapt ball to taper.
they are about £30 & will fit any of the earlier ball fitment h/stocks, dave.

              Bearing supplier

I think you mean Simply Bearings as there is no web site for Specialist Bearings on Google.

I have used a thin chisel to remove them. Its about 1" wide.I think its called a splitting chisel.Get it under the race and hit it with a hammer.Keep moving it round. You could get a conversion to Timken but it raised the gap from the fork top to the yolk.I had a 1959 SA that I think was a prototype as it converted from ball to Timkin without increasing the gap.The fork was longer between the races than normal. The 1960 SCS incorporated the Timkin bearing in its casting.1959 was the last year for ball Hawkstones

Ask for a feather splitter. Used by electricians to lift floorboards.

Does anyone know the part number for the Timkin head bearings which apparently are Timken 7100 ??
I have had an inquiry from an owner of a 24DF police bike. I assume they are the same size for all models.
