24mx1 1964 Challenger gearbox

Hi All,

My 1964 challenger has the kidney shape gearbox, I’m lead down believe this isn’t the original gearbox for this year machine. Can anyone tell me why this would of been changed and if it is a good modification or not. Also the correct name for the kidney shaped gearbox.

A good modification at the time. Original box was particularly problematic in the MX1. Kidney box was fitted in MX2 (1965) to improve matters. Still not the ultimate solution though, and another box was provided in later Challenger variants.
