  • challenger gearbox ? 24mx5/24mx4/36mx4

    Hello everyone

I have a problem with a late challenger gearbox the shaft for the
clutch seems short ? the clutch wheel will not line up with the
front engine sprocket its a widths of a single chain
? is this the clutch alignment or the shaft or gear ? wrong way around.

Have you fitted the hardened washer that sits behind the clutch. If not it will allow the clutch to go too far in. The part number is G1008/58

No splines as I recall, about 3-4mm thick.

You may also need to fit shims between the spacer and clutch to finally align the chain.

                        Gary

on my MX4 I have two shims, from memory about 0.025" in total. Without the shims, the primary chain was grinding on the edge of the sprockets. You may need to try various thicknesses until the chain runs smoothly. You may be lucky and not need any shims.

I have no idea where you can get these shims, perhaps Terry Sewell or Geoff Nunn.
