All road bikes did have the Doherty levers (except the DCX) but not normally the ball ended version, but in the interest of safety its as well to fit them. I have them on my bike.
I have just replaced my cheap 'made in Japan' clutch and brake levers for Doherty type 217 for 1" handle bars on my MX2 Challenger from Classic Bike Parts see https://www.classicbikepartscheshire...ll-ended-p1107
They are much better quality and I finally have a clutch lever that feels positive and actually works.
It is imperative to measure the operating ratio, the distance between the nipple centre and the pivot centre. Fitting levers with a bigger dimension will make the action stiffer.
