  • Ex Frank Ball Greeves Oulton Racer In Cheffin's Auction Today (16/10/2010.)

I just spotted this interesting Greeves racer being auctioned by Cheffins today (bit late I know!) I wonder what it fetched in the end? Did anyone in the club buy it...? Looks like it'll need a fair bit of restoration from the pic.

Cheffins results on Frank Ball's bikes

      Lot No 1212
1972 346cc Frank Ball Greeves Prototype Racer This machine was constructed by Frank during 1971-72, at first using a Greeves factory backed engine of 410cc later increased to 498cc. The engine was developed during the late 19600s in conjunction with Greeves by the famed 2-stroke specialist Brian Woolley and was acquired by Frank in early 1971. As Greevess by Carrick and Walker describes (pages 112-113) the engine eventually came to Frank who did a considerable amount of work on the machine including fitting Ducati front forks and rear wheel, all supplied by Mick Walker Motorcycles. Eventually even Frank gave up the struggle to develop the big single into a fast machine and one that actually finished races! Subsequently he fitted the 346cc Greeves Oulton engine, as fitted currently, and successfully raced this until the mid 19700s with several leaderboard positions throughout Great Britain most notably at his local circuit Snetterton. This is an opportunity to acquire a machine of significant historical status as the last serious Greeves road racing bike.

      Estimate 3,900 - 4,900

      Not Sold

      Lot No 1214
c1970s Greeves prototype racer This part constructed machine was built by Frank during the early 1970s and was probably intended as a back up for the 1972 machine. It would form the basis for either building a replica machine or a special in its own right. Currently the machine consists of frame, swinging arm, fuel tank, rear wheel assembly and front forks, the latter two components being of Ducati manufacture Result: £140

I don't have a copy of OBM, is it in a similar state to how it looked 4 years ago?

Looks better than when in Cheffins sale, but very small pic. Phone number is 01270 842206 no doubt seller would forward pics if you are interested.
For the racer data base the owner appears (according to Google search) to be D Poole, Crewe, Cheshire

This is the link when it was in Cheffins sale http://www.cheffins.co.uk/lot/-469623-vintage-0 the one in Brians post original post seems to be dead.

                Frank Ball Greeves racer

                Dear all,
Just to let you know I have accuired the Greeves racer. It has been restored to a high standard but the ign was duff so am in the throws of replacing it then will get it going. Intention is to parade/race/sprint the bike this year.
I am a new member so any help/advice (other than don't buy it! its too late)
would be most welcome particularly if anyone has any pictures of Frank Ball riding the bike. Apart from the picture in R. Carrick/M.Walkers book I think that is the only mention of Greeves 'prototype' but I understand now it was not a proper Greeves project, still an intersting bike never the less and hope it is cheaper to run than a Manx or a G50

                    Ex Frank Ball Greeves Racer.

                    Hi Tony,

Congrats on the new aquisition and welcome aboard! Hope you have a lot of fun with the bike, and great to know it has found a good home.

Considering the bike's condition when sold, it'd be geat to see what it looks like now it's been restored Tony. Any chance of seeing some more recent pics please?

                    Brian.

Glad it was bought by someone on here! Nice one. I was tempted, but decided to stick to riding bikes in the mud!

                        frank ball greeves

Thanks for the replies gents, I have just fitted an electrexworld ign today but have had a chance to fire her up yet. Bit unsure on the sealant used in the tank so was looking for some ethanol free petrol if it exists or maybe avgas of I can get it. Will post some photo's when I suss out how to! I intend to go to the agm so may take the bike as well in my van so if anyone is interested they can have a look at it. Regards

Depends where you live for ethanol free.Shell Super unleaded is ethanol free in the northwest as is Esso and Total. I am running the Silverstone on Sunoco R6SR 105 octane, guaranteed no ethanol, this year. Last year ran 50/50 with Super unleaded in a fibreglass tank lined with Caswell with no problem. Dogsbody
