    Steve ,

Chris Cobb's Patfinder is in the incorrect colour , too dark .

How did you sort out the dragging clutch ?.

      electrics & clutch problem

      John,
The output from the new Powerdynamo system is 12V 100W for the lights so it should be a major improvement on the original system.

      Chris,
I bought Chris Cobb's Pathfinder expecting major mechanical maladies as he had been unable to get the clutch to release and thought that this may be due to excessive crankshaft endfloat. He said he had managed to start the engine but thought it sounded noisy mechanically.
Inspection of the clutch assembly revealed a damaged release mechanism which I replaced with one from a spare engine.
Also the clutch cable was incorrectly fitted, approaching fom the rear with a tight U bend causing excessive friction in the cable.
I replaced the old clutch cable with a new Puch M125 cable from RBO in Austria which is a perfect fit without any modifications. This now approaches from the front without a U bend and the clutch is light and normal in operation.
The engine sounds normal with the usual ringing sound from the large cooling fins. The gear change is light & positive and the machine is a pleasure to ride.
This has been one of my most pleasing purchases and that it belonged to Derry Preston-Cobb's nephew does nothing to detract from it's appeal.

        Steve ,

I speak to Chris Cobb fairly often , he started at Greeves/Invacar in the Invacar repair shop .

He mentioned the clutch and as he said the operating arm was OK , I assumed it was incorrect end float .

Glad you sorted it out easily . The trials version was great fun on the road , just use the top three gears and leave everything else behind . The enduro version was exactly the same .

        Chris

          Puch 175 MX

Looks like Puch used the Pathfinder engine in their own 175cc MX. Have found this link to some pics. http://www.theowencollection.com/74Puch.htm Looks a nice little bike, wonder if they did an enduro version.
It would also explain why the fins are cut away on the LH side to accomodate the exhaust on the Puch bike.

John, you used the term "Puch used the Pathfinder engine" as if Greeves were a major force! Puch made and sold thousands of the 175cc and other capacity bikes using this engine in both MX and Enduro forms, many in the USA where they and one or two other makes took over the mantle from Greeves as a favourite make. Greeves sales of Pathfinders were minute compared to those of the parent company.

Pathfinder update / flywheel extractor problem

I have just collected the frame etc from the paint shop and am hoping to assemble the bike over the next few weeks. The paint shop used their range of colour chips to approximate Holly green.
I have encountered a problem extracting the flywheel which was unexpected.
The diameter of the extractor required is larger on the Enduro version with lighting coils than on the Trials version without.
My set of Sealey extractors does not go up to this size.
I wondered if any one knows what the size is & where to source one.

              Thanks & regards,
              Steve

                Pathfinder Enduro progress

Decided to start assembling this machine today.
I am currently restoring a Puch M125S and discovered that the special blind rivets supplied by Puch specialist RBO in Austria to refix the manufacturer's plate to the frame are also a perfect fit for the Pathfinder.

You are spot on as usall Brain.

Most notedly were Sears brand bikes...major USA department store.

I have found several Puch 175cc engine books on ebay. Quite interesting.

Let me know if anyone needs copies or me to look anything up.

                  Good luck!

Sorry about that Brian you are of course correct, here is a pic of a Puch 175 which clearly shows why the fins are cut away on the cylinder to clear the exhaust

                            Pathfinder Trials

                            Hi,

When Pathfinders first came out, there was one in the south eastern centre that went very well I do belive it was owned and ridden by one of the Addsetts. Perhaps Chis G knows more. Also the puch engine was a seconed choice, I belive, as the supplier of the original engines it was designed for pulled out.

                            Just a thought Terry Sewell
