Having registered a couple of machines with DVLA, I have not taken out insurance on either. Unless the system has changed recently I do not think this will be a requirement.

I agree, Simon, it shouldn't need insurance.

RH happily insured my Tre-Greeves while it was still an unregistered Hawkstone on the frame number. I used to always recommend Peter James but RH seem much better as well as cheaper. And they don't charge for amendments! https://www.rhspecialistinsurance.co...bike-insurance

Interesting that you have DVLA visiting. Is this instead of getting a dating letteer from the GRA or similar? Do they charge and if so how much?

DVLA do often require their own inspection in additional to the clubs, this usually if bike has been off the road untaxed for a long period, or some other issue ie another bike with same frame number! DVLA have tightened up in recent years, in view of the number of fakes and ringers around.

Yes. Got dating certificate elsewhere as gra require ins, mot & charge for inspection. Go down other route. No ins or mot needed, & dvla inspection is free.
inspection took place yesterday & all went well.
                        Just waiting for v5 now.

I'm sure that is not the case! Who told you that?

I've inspected bikes for the GRA and all that is required is for the bike to be in one piece, not necessarily a runner. There might be a cost i.e. travel expenses for the GRA inspector, but that's fair enough if you can't take the bike to the inspector, who will be a volunteer.

It absolutely isn't and I remember Andy coming to inspect my bike in its original state. As it happens I had isnured it (as a non-runner) but that hadn't been essential.I do wonder whether DVLA inspectors are experts on all the marques they are asked to inspect.

The DVLA inspectors are not vehicle specialists, they are a firm contracted by DVLA not direct employees. All they are interested in is the VIN number is correct. This is to ensure that the bike is the same one as in the submitted pics. As far I am aware club authorisation is still required with the initial application.
