Nick, sorry to hear about your health problems. As for under valuation of Greeves not sure where you are coming from on that. Generally all classic bikes have risen in value over the last few years, the Vincents, Brough's etc always at the top of the pile. Greeves prices will never be up there with them. At the end of the day a bike is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Personally I think that many of the run of the mill Greeves bikes that we see on eBay etc are well over price for whats on offer, just look at some on eBay which have been for sale for months and not selling. Your bike is obviously something special, but sadly the ISDT (the olympics of motorcycling) does not register with buyers. Yes they know the names of the famous racers, Barry Sheene, Phil Read, Agustini etc but names of many trials, scramble and ISDT riders dont really register. Other than maybe the likes of Sammy Miller, Brian Stonebridge or Dave Bickers. Had your bike have been a famous road racing bike that won the TT it would have been a different picture. You did the right thing and put it in a well publicised specialist auction which produced a valuation, but lower that you expected. The problem also these days is the high cost of restoration, you don't get much done for £1000. With even standard Villiers engines costing in excess of £1000, wheels around £500 a pair you can see where I am coming from. If you farm out the whole job to one of the professional restorers, their labour rates will increase costs astronomically. Finally you say that low prices are not good for the club, sorry I disagree, high prices put prospective buyers/potential members off, if prices came down then there would be more people buying and riding Greeves so membership would increase.
