  • Decoke time

Thought it time I did a decoke on the East Coaster as its been about 10000 miles since I last did it. Just took the heads off, only a few thou of carbon in the heads so just removed that with a piece of soft alloy as scraper followed by a quick rub round with wire wool. Putting a finger down the barrels there did not appear much build up of carbon in the exhaust ports, made an L shaped scraper up & just cleaned around them though. I did not remove carbon from pistons so as to retain a good seal with bore. If you do scrape pistons leave about 1/8" round the edge. Heads back on & quick road test & the bike appears to have a bit more 'sparkle' to acceleration.
Low ash modern two stroke oil (Comma 2 Stroke mineral) does not give high carbon build up like the old oils of the 1960's. Villiers recommended Castrol XL or SAE30.
