  • Greeves triumph

This is the reason I’ve always wanted a Greeves for off road riding. It’s from a book given to me by my late father. The book is called built for speed and was published late 50’s early 60’s.

Yes, that's one of the inspirations for my current build. A very cobby machine as they would have said in the day.

And I'd be happy to add anything gleaned from my first foray into the arena....

A superb result Ian and a stunning example of the breed. Your bike is a great credit to you, and I'm sure you won't mind me including Phil Hyde here too. His knowledge and expertise with these wonderful machines is unrivalled in my experience and should be first call for anyone contemplating a similar build.

Well done indeed Ian, and hope you have a lot of fun with it. Great to see the finished pics and thanks for posting them.

            Brian.

Many thanks Brian. I've been suffering with shingles for the last few weeks so unable to progress much but have fitted lights and indicators for road use. Looking forward to riding the bike!

Ouch! Sorry to hear that Ian, nasty, and hope you get some relief soon. My mother-in-law suffers and it isn't nice.....

At least you've got the Grumph to look forward to when you're able, and not too long now hopefully. I really like the line of the pipes, really suits the bike in my opinion and looks 'factory' if you know what I mean. There's always been something a bit special about a well put together Greeves Triumph to me, whatever the intended discipline. Each one has that 'bespoke' quality and is unique which always attracts my attention.

Come to that, I've always had a soft spot for the various Greeves 'Hybrids' (for want of a better term), and the sheer variety and diversity of engines fitted over the years, often (usually!) with some very interesting engineering solutions and creativity on display, is quite a 'thing' when you stop and think about it. It's something that goes back to the beginning of Greeves production history too of course, before they started making their own units, and includes Brian Stonebridge's significant success with his amazing NSU Max engined 'factory' scrambler

(Actually, 'Greeves Hybrids' is an interesting idea for a new thread......mmm.)

I've often wondered what might have been had OBG been successful in getting an engine deal with Triumph back in the day, especially when I see such well presented examples like yours Ian, Tony's too. His 'desert/adventure bike' approach shows the 'adaptability' of the concept superbly, then there are Phil's own well proven trials machines, Mike Tizzard's long-distance trial bike(s) and Dave Pink's and Don Heath's beautiful roadsters, all bikes that come to mind from over the years and built to suit their owners individual intended use utilising Meriden power. There are so many more, and that's just the Triumph-engined machines.

Be great to see it when it's all finished and the lights etc are fitted Ian, love to see some more pics as and when.

                Enjoy!

                Brian.
