  • Challenger Speedometer

I wasn't able to find any posts on this subject so I'll ask - I have a '69 MX6 that I was hoping to retrofit with a speedometer. They didn't originally have one, but I know some other models did.

For those that did run a speedometer, how was it usually setup would that be something hard to retrofit?

    Speedo drive

The drive would be taken from the back wheel, you will therefore need a rear hub with speedo drive already installed in the brake plate, or if it already has the hole machined just the actual drive & driving gear (threaded onto hub). Plus of course a cable & the speedo itself. These are around but can be expensive, they do from time to time appear on eBay. May be better to source a complete wheel then sell yours on.
A much cheaper & simpler option if you just need it for legal reasons is to fit a digital cycle one available from around £15 from the likes of Halfords & other cycle shops.

      Hi Greevous,

There has actually been a fair amount posted on speedometers and drives for Greeves here on the forum. Rather than give you specific links to threads with useful information, may I suggest you try out the 'search' facility? It's a really handy feature, and can save loads of time trying to find specific information on topics.

The 'search' tab can be found on the blue toolbar on the main forum page, to the right of 'New Posts'. Click on this, then type 'Speedo' into the search field. I'd recommend you select 'Posts' rather than 'Threads' as this will give provide more 'hits'. Just click on any of the posts to view them, and click 'back' to return to the listing and view the next one, etc.

      Hope this helps.

      Brian.

You can buy a specialised motor bike speedo, much like a push bike one but larger clearer, cleverer and of course more expensive, Lots of LDT and Enduro riders use them

          There are more expensive ones

I'd seen those digital speedometers, and if it were strictly for legal reasons, I'd definitely go with one of those - those seem the easiest way to go. I'm hoping to make it legal while still keeping aesthetics in mind, so something mechanical would be nice, though I may have to live for a non OEM solution.

We shall see. Regardless, thanks for the suggestions.

As Challengers did not have speedo's fitted even a mechanical (Smiths) one, it would not be an original fitting. The digital cycle ones are small enough to be inconspicuos & some can be removed if you wanted to show it as original.

The ISDT Challengers had speedos. They used a CEV drive box off the front wheel to a Smiths clock mounted on the bar clamps.
