  • Restoring Paddle Hubs

Having had the Paddle Hubs Media Blasted I am unsure what finish they should be before having the Wheels Rebuilt, should the Metal part of the Hubs be painted Silver and the Aluminium Paddles left bare, or should they be Painted or even Clear Varnished to avoid corrosion ??
    Thank you
    Peter

Normally the steel hubs would be painted Moorland Blue. Click image for larger version

ID:	82800 Up to you whether you lacquer the alloy finned muffs or not. Greeves used to lacquer the alloy beams back in the day, but I am not sure anyone bothers now. Don't paint them though!

Thanks for the replies, Bike looks nice Ian, I think I will Lacquer the Paddles though it will make them easier to keep clean !!

Not a bad idea Peter. I no longer own that machine,a 25DC, although I rather wish I had hung onto it! I only have singles, but the twins are so smooth, and sound great! Good luck with your refurb. You did well to find a set of paddle hubs.

A friend of mine who is a professional sprayer and body worker, bought a couple of bikes recently and the spokes were rusty and the hubs also the rims, and thought about cost etc and how perfect , o original he wanted it, He then decided on having it all done with powdercoating in silver, and i must say it looks fantastic, and the cost involved was a fraction of what he could have spent? so with scrambles rims etc that are not chromed it is well worth thinking about Cheers all Dicky faggetter

The Brake Plates together with the rest of the Bike will be Sprayed Blue, I just did the Hubs as a separate job to see what the Colour looked like

Excellent! I can see now they are in primer. I see a member described some of us forum members on the Greeves Enthusiast's Facebook as being anoraks.... I guess I count amongst them!

                          I am ignoring that Tony!

RAL 5001 full gloss seems to be the one most people go for Peter, as it is readily available in all forms, from powder-coat to rattle cans. It is possibly a touch lighter than original, but 'original' varied from one batch to another, depending on how shaky the hand was of the chap who was pouring some black into the blue, apparently! I can't find a cross-reference for Squadron Blue, but it looks pretty good, and used to be mooted as one to go for.
