  • 360 sprint bike

Not really a project yet, just a bit of fiddling to see if it's feasible.
Plunger BSA A10 gearbox will bolt straight to the back of a Challenger engine. Unfortunately the Nova 5 speed selector fouls the inside of the case (the later swing arm gearbox had a different selector mechanism)
I trimmed the case to allow the selector quadrant to swing through its full arc then whittled a block of aluminium to close the gap, this is now with the welder.
So I will have a 360 with a pre '54 gearbox shell with a '54-'62 sandwich plate and outer cover. Needle roller layshaft bearings and Nova close ratio 5 speed cluster. This ensemble will be nestled rather snugly in a MCS/2 (MDS) frame

    Wow

    Hi,

Sounds like a great project, a hawkstone with a flexable 36 bhp and 5 gears...

Sounds like the stuff of dreams, keep it as a scrambler though, I'd love to see that in the greeves championship...

    Any pics?

    Scott

Ps I haven't forgotten the swingarm...

This will be a pure tarmac bike, think similar to an Oulton with a smaller tank (along the lines of my avatar)

Picked my gearbox shell up from the welder. An hour in the lathe to clean up the gasket face then 1/2 hour in the milling machine to machine clearance for the selector quadrant.
I now have a gearbox shell that mates to the greeves engine. From the 1st gear position, lifting the lever it goes clickick, click, click, click. I just need to buy the shafts and gears now

I had a chat with Simon at Nametab today. He will re-liner my barrel to 78mm to suit a Maico 400 piston and rod. This will give me a capacity of 344. I want to keep under 350cc to keeep away from very quick Suzuki T500s and Triumph daytonas.

things must be catching , sitting on my bench is a late griffon engine with a bsa gearbox and norton clutch fitted ready for fitting to a frame , a look through my stocks of bits has unearthed a nice tls front hub ,spare set of ducati 250 forks, a very light rear hub and a couple of used alloy rims so with a bit of luck i will be riding the greeves special at the classic bike sprint at north weald in essex on sunday august 9th ,along with my 1933 panther , if you have yours ready to run by then why not come and join me for a great day of bikes and fun, will

I rode there a few times when Terry Homan used to run it. In those days I had a supercharged weslake single, even deaf people could hear it

i have only been doing the scrutineering at north weald for 19 years so we may have met over the years as i have looked over most of the bikes and no doubt i will continue until i get to old will.
