I am trying to get an idea of the number of GRA members are in the South West ie Somerset ,Dorset ,Devon ,Cornwall , Wiltshire and maybe Hampshire Sussex ,as we only have the Classic bike show at the Bath & West where we meet up .

Would be good to have a GRA day down here as I may of found a venue .
Please let me know if anyone is interested ,I will be in contact with the committee to check if this will be possible.
    Look forward to your replies.

Me, in Cornwall. Sounds like a plan, Simon!

Of course, forum regulars could be just the tip of the iceberg. The request probably needs to go into LL.

Hello Simon. Great to have a volunteer for a show. When and where and how many days do you have in mind It appeals to me for a trip down west. Will it be indoor or out in the warm sunshine.
                  Lets spread the word.

I recently attended the new Bultaco club's first event near Popham. This was primarily held on the Sunday but camping was available for anyone who wanted to go down on the Saturday and enjoy a beer and bbq! Needless to say, I was in the latter category! The idea was that people turned up with their bikes to show plus anything else of interest and anything else to sell. On the Sunday, there were a few trials sections for those that fancied a ride and a small enduro that lasted about a lap before people got bored! There was also a quite spectacular small flat-track circuit as that is what the landowner is into. This was all followed by another BBQ and eventually people drifted off. The interesting thing was that people just weren't bothered about riding! Whether it was too hot or there was more interest in socialising, I just don't know. Suffice it to say, it was a jolly good weekend format and it started me thinking hence my bit in the last Leading Link.

I think such an event would also work for us. The only problem when you ride bikes is the matter of insurance but do we need to ride the as such? I was thinking of an event where people turn up with the option of a Saturday night bash. People could bring along their bikes to show to other members or receive advice and even get some issues fixed and catapult themselves a bit further down the rebuild road!

The only problem is that it is getting on in the year but what about a winter ‘do’? This is not as daft as it sounds – honest! With the availability of the village hall, if the weather was bad, we could always hide in that. If the weather was ok, it could be an indoor / outdoor type of event. We could have speakers on restoration and rebuilding Greeves as well as demos on such things as reboring, measuring, and electroplating or just about any other subject anyone can come up with. A Greeves-related (mainly) bring and buy would be good although with some enthusiasm, this could become a small autojumble. My local section of the AJS & Matchless Club have held a jumble in a local pub car park in October every year and very successful it has proved to be. Don’t forget the BBQ either – they can be very successful in the winter too! At least you know it will be cold and probably wet as well and one can therefore dress accordingly.

Well, there we are Simon, my two penny worth! What do others think?! As a starter what could we call it? A Greeves Day? The Greeves Masterclass? A mad-persons collective?

Not wanting to put a damper on things but a 'stand alone' Greeves only event may be a bit ambitious, especially in the 'remote' West Country. As the co orgainser of the Cambridge Classic Bike show I can say that even when opening up to all makes it only attracts around 50 to 60 bikes.
So best to latch it onto another event, existing show or fete in the area, like the one that John Runnicles and friends organised at his village fete.
That way the main event organisers cover the insurance so leaving just bike line up to be arranged on the day by the Greeves enthusiasts. Getting involved in scramble or trials demos will attract higher insurance premiums as they would not be covered but the normal show insurance. Things could turn out nasty in the event of an accident.

Simon, i think its a great idea, just to have a meet up & swap a few parts etc, of course this was debated before in the thread greeves days, but that fell victim to the over enthusiastic imagination of some, of what the w/end should have been.
Keep it simple & achievable & i think a small yearly gathering could grow into something bigger, but open it to all greeves enthuiusasts, not just the gra, it would give greater scope to attract more numbers, & possibly recruit a few new members along the way.
No i think its a great idea simon, wish i had thought of it myself!

Dave , yes that was my idea to have a meet up and get together not to put on a bike show .The place I was thinking of holding this get together is the local Social club in Tatworth they have a large car park and on the other side of the road have a very large hard standing area we can use.
Unfortunately they have no undercover area so will have to be outside maybe under a few gazebos
We can use the social club for food ,drinks ,toilets they can also put info on there facebook page to let people know that we have a few bikes on show .
There are alot of bikes in the area so if published we should get some people to come and look and maybe get a couple of new members .
Hopefully Dick maybe able to get Badger Goss to pop along as he lives only a few miles away might attract a few people.
It will have to be next year now but hopefully it will go ahead if people let me know if they are will to come ,I have had quite a few so far .
                            Simon
