  • Reg Everett's Book ('Rocker to Racer')

Anyone else read Reg's book yet? His tales bring back a few memories of climbing circuit fences and getting into various other scrapes!

This weather reminds me of Brands 1975 - we were racing at the Transatlantic Trophy meeting but when we got there (through 6 inches of snow, nothing stopped us then!), the meeting, unsurprisingly, was cancelled.

However, on the Sunday was Lydden. A call to Brenda Harris on the Saturday confirmed the meeting was ON! We loaded up and set off for east Kent. On arrival, we were directed to the ambulance gate and in on to the circuit to do half a dozen laps in cars, vans, etc, to break up the snow! We then formed a working party with brooms and swept the racing line and anything else we could manage. The meeting then started and was held between the snow!

Just compare that to today with all the schools shut and people 'unable to get to work!'

Were we mad or just like Reg? Never say die!

On another occasion, I was on my way to Brands when the wheel complete with spring broke off the trailer. Oh dear! or words to that effect. About 2 minutes later, a chap pulled up and said follow me so we abandoned the bike, lashed up the empty trailer and followed him home (around the corner). He lent me his trailer and we got to Brands without even missing practice. I returned the trailer the next day and collected the remains of mine.

Nowadays, my bike would have been knicked from the side of the road and would you really expect to lend a trailer to a complete stranger?!

A chap I know is taking his 16 year old son racing and already he is on his 2nd sign-written and logo'd van!!

    They doont knoo they're borrnn!!

I've written a review of "Rocker to Racer" for RealClassic. I don't know if Frank will use it, he hasn't said. I'm going to run it in LL153 anyway.

Reg's account of getting started in racing certainly reminded me of when I started. No money! Mind you that wasn't the only reason I wasn't particularly fast...

It snowed at Cadwell Park the day I broke my collarbone.

I've read Reg's book and thoroughly enjoyed it! Highly recommended!

It was interesting to read the story of the Silverstone prototype from Reg's viewpoint. It filled in a lot of gaps (I thought) on the version in the Walker/Carrick Greeves book.

I read your review on the 'RC' website Colin and thought it was great! Did you have any joy on that free review copy/discount offer info I sent from the publishers by the way?

I ordered the new 'Villiers' book from Mick Walker recently (thanks Wendy, what have I done to deserve you!), and enjoyed a really nice natter with him. He says that publication has been delayed a bit (due to getting the second 'Seely' volume out), but should be out Feb./March time with luck. Looking forward to that! I sent him a copy of the Battlesbridge DVD with my order-hope he enjoys it! Lovely bloke Mick, a real gent I reckon.

Great story Rob, re Brands/trailers etc. What a kind gent to do that for you! As you say, couldn't see it happening today, sad to say....such a shame isn't it? Now then; racing on SNOW....!!! Reckon you and Colin should start an 'Ice Racing' section then! (see 'self-tappers' post for further technical 'advice'!!!)

            Brian.

              Glad you liked the review.

The factory was inclined to suppress Reg's conception of the Silverstone idea, probably because Bert fell out with him after he returned the remains of 24RAS101 to the factory after his Mallory Park prang. I think Reg acknowledges as much in the book. Possibly it was politic at the time for Rob and Mick to play Reg's contribution down a bit.

The real hero is Bob Mills!

Ended up buying the book, full price, from Mick - ever the mug, me!

(didn't get paid for the review either...)

Yes I did mate, and an excellent job as always. It's not easy to convey the information in a concise yet informative way, impartial yet entertaining, but still with a worthwhile opinion to inform and advise the reader-you make it look easy Colin. Sorry to hear the free review copy didn't work out-I did me level best guv'nor!

It's a shame there's not more dosh in the writing game isn't it? I've been advised many times to write a book for guitarists on applied music theory but have never bothered for that very reason (work vs payoff ratio!) Wendy's ex husband (Mark Turner) has had 3 or 4 books published now but never seems to make a lot out of it, especially as/if it's on a specialist subject....and there is so much 'out there' already these days, especially on the net etc. Oh well...!

I agree with your comments re the 'Silverstone Story' and thanks for the interesting added viewpoints, my interpretation too based on what I've read. Bob Mills seems to have played such an important role in the development of many significant/important Greeves bikes from what I know. I also wonder if he ended up 'caught in the middle' to some extent on a few occasions, including with the development of the NSU engined bikes (at least until it got the 'nod' from the boss...!) Might be an interesting story there perhaps; 'The Unsung Heroes Of Greeves'? Most enthusiasts will know of the 'big' names, but it's often the 'backroom boys' who contribute so much and no one ever hears about them........such is life etc!
