  • An interesting read for Starmaker owners and anyone with a tuning interest.

https://ajsstormer.wordpress.com/201...rst-blog-post/ This is a huge article on the Starmaker, later Stormer, but of interest across the board.

Yes an interesting read, but one of the big failures of the Starmaker and the later Stormer engine was the fact that it was still fitted with a 4 speed gearbox when almost all the competitors were specifying 5 speed units. OK a close ratio 4 speed box may have been acceptable in a motocross bike of the day, but not enough gears for enduro, trials or trail bike use, or indeed roadsters which where then coming on steam from the Jap manufactures with 5 or even 6 speed gearboxes.. Villiers obviously spent a lot of money and development of the engine, but just carried on with the old 4 speed gearbox all be it beefed up some what from the 9E. The Starmaker could really have been a 'starmaker' with a 5 speed box.

Yes, it had so many good features that were wasted for the "Can't see the wood for the trees" attitude, where the competition were progressing in other directions, but Villiers, as with many British Manufacturers, seemed to ignore the progress being made overseas. It shadows the BSA attitude to the Hondas they bought and declared them to be poor designs.
