  • Sprocket for Pie-Crust Hub

Can anyone please point me in the direction of a supplier for the above? I have done a search of the site, and drawn a blank. VS do not have them, but someone must, as plenty are still being raced!

    Many thanks. Ian

Sadly one supplier who probably could have supplied these sprockets, John Hemmings of Sprockets Unlimited, passed away on 29th August. His partner Jane Page has been forced to close the business http://www.sprocketsunlimited.com/

I expect you have asked but surely Talon will do them?

Sad news, John. However, on reading their website, they have only been concentrating on chains for years, and have not been replacing any stocks of sprockets, or making any.

I look forward to hearing from our active scramblers, who no doubt still need a new sprocket now and again! Or anyone else who knows? Our serial restorers, perhaps? You know who you are!

Thanks Charlie. Presumably yours was a pie-crust hub? The roadster & trials paddle hubs were different, with different sprockets.

Just checked Talon's website, and fell at the first hurdle. Checking the product finder, under 'choose a make', they don't list Greeves!

            I will ring them tomorrow.

At the end of the day its a basic flat sprocket so buy a blank with the right amount of teeth and get the centre bored out to fit hub and drill fixing holes. Duncan of Parkwood Products should be able to make one given the sizes

That is the last resort John, but an expensive way of doing it. I just do not want to keep throwing silly money at this bike. The centre hole is 7 1/2" diameter. I don't have a drill bit quite that big....

I am wondering what others; particularly those who race with them, and who must wear them out and have to change them; do. There are plenty of members who fit that description. They probably haven't seen this thread yet......

I appreciate your interest. I will be ringing Talon shortly.

                Cheers. Ian

Just seen your thread, Ian. I have a good spare one, slightly used, which I might be encouraged to part with. Talon alloy, 5-hole, 7 1/2 inch centre, 428 chain, 68 teeth.

                  Regards,

                  JR

What haven't you got, John?! My one is still useable, with no hooked teeth, but there is definite wear, compared with a new sprocket. As it will be wearing a new chain, a new sprocket seems sensible. It really depends on how much yours is worn? Can you send me photos please? I have a new 428 sprocket for a tin hub. I will lay my pie-crust one on top of it, photograph it and send it to you, to see how it compares with yours.

                    Regards.

                    Ian

I probably should have had that SAS project, Ian? I could have restored it at less cost than it is costing you! Bit late now, though, eh?
Will email you photos later today.
                      Take care.

Interestingly I phoned Talon and they said no, it is very specialist, they don't make them. They could as a one-off, with very extended lead time, and expensive. Ho-hum....

Sad news about John Hemmings. He made the last alloy sprocket for my Silverstone earlier this year. I have bought several of these from him in various sizes over the last few years, all made as one-offs from the drawings he had, complete with lightening holes at, what I thought, was a very reasonable price.

John W. Re John Hemming, you may have the wrong person. The one who makes sprockets is in Knighton, Shropshire. Sprockets Unlimited are in Evesham, Worcestershire. Can you check it out please?
