  • Villiers 9e gearbox problem

    Any ideas chaps ?
i have a 9e gearbox runs fine for about 10 miles then if I kickstart it the bike jumps into gear.
then After this has happened a few times i lose all the gears. gear lever moves but cant select any gears.
i cant see anything broken onside tge gearbox.
what on earth is going wrong, any advice greatfully received!

Sounds like the gear selector plunger spring has broken (or weak) you will need to dismantle the gearbox to replace this. There is an exploded diagram on here http://www.villiers.info/ (click on E series in parts selection then onto 7E3 7E4 9E3 9E4 for parts list diagram) The main diagram is for 4 speed with 3 speed inset, both use a spring loaded plunger to hold selector fork in place. Best though to buy a 9E service manual as that will explain the assembly sequence. If I am correct the gear cluster must be removed and refitted as a unit, so you need to remove the clutch & final drive sprocket.

Check to see if you have some end float on mainshaft, you have to remove clutch case to do this. It may be tightening up when hot.
