  • Smiths Speedo Drives and Hub Gears (14T)

Further to our last committee meeting and discussions on the availabilty of drive gears for Greeves BHC hubs, I spotted this item recently on EBay. It sold for £88 plus postage......EEK! I know that when Villiers services had the gears available they were about £14! Hope we are able to source a 'new' supply then.....!

I didn't realize they made speedo ring gears out of gold. They must do at that price!

Ian, I still have the problem of opening thumbnails, the same thing happens with Brian's picture of the speedo drive - screen goes dark and "no permission" message comes up.

Yes, isn't it amazing what people are prepared to pay for these things....lots of bids too. Doesn't really help keeping prices reasonable though does it, but then that's EBay for you I guess.

Glad the one on my bike seems to work ok for the time being, touch wood.

The pic opens up ok for me, but not the 'new' pic of my bike that I posted even though I attached it in the same way as the speedo drive pic.

        Brian.

          Speedo Drives

Apparently these are like the proverbual hens teeth, according to Dave Pink who had one for sale at the last Cambridge Club night. Cant remember how much he wanted for it but it was not cheap. I cant really see why there is a shortage of these as the basic angle drive was the same on many makes of
british bike. Maybe we need to look outside Greeves circles.

A source has been found! The following, from Peter Smith will appear in April Leading Link:

British Hub Co. Speedo Drive - New Parts Available

As the Scottish and Hawkstone marque specialist I receive many enquiries about the various parts in the speedometer drive system.

Over recent years it has become clear that new and used replacement speedo drive parts have become difficult to find, so it is good to discover that help is at hand. During a casual conversation in January with a non-member I discovered that new parts are now available from Colin East of East Restorations. Having spoken to Colin he has confirmed that he makes the following parts for the British Hub Co half-width with locknut and spring washer steel ‘tin’ hub as fitted to Greeves models until the full width alloy hub appeared around 1962.

            Parts available are:

            44T left-hand thread hub gear £40.00
14T drive gear, on gearbox £17.00
            Right –angle gearbox £76.00

Prices were correct at time of writing, early February, but please check before you buy.

Other Greeves services on offer include machining of front metalastics for front forks and supplying Greeves paint. Colin also offers a range of other restoration services, see his website.

For information on the above items contact:

            East Restorations. The Meeting House,

            Lincoln LN5 0EF

            Tel. 01522 810029 email: eastrestorations@tinyworl.co.uk

I should say here that I do not know nor have I used East Restorations’ products or services, so I’m passing on this information in good faith.

That's great news Colin! Cheers for posting it and many thanks to 'Greevesnut' for sourcing the info. Nice one Peter!

Looking at S/H prices, these seem very reasonable indeed for 'brand new' parts, and without the 50 odd years of wear and tear too!

Right, I'm off to have a look at that website!

              Brian.

Just found this thread. I was watching a drive on fleabay a couple of months back, it went for £176!! I need one myself for my TFS, and this thread is quite old now. Are these drives still available?

                  East restorations

I have used them a few times for servicing drives and new cogs - excellent service.
