  • Another 'barn find' Scottish surfaces

What looks to be a genuine 'barn (or maybe shed) find' seen recently on Greeves Facebook.
The Scottish looks to be a circa 1959 24TAS (no frame number as yet so cant be sure of model) has been acquired by Mark Thomas of Brighton. It has a May 1977 East Sussex registration which suggests it may have been re registered at that time, maybe original number was taken off as a cherished number by a previous owner, or it had not been road registered when new. This would have been back in the days before DVLA took records over from local councils. There were no 'age related' numbers in those days and the council would have just issued it with a new number from the current series. The number SPN799R is not on the DVLA so looks like the bike did not get taxed for long after 1977 (DVLA took records over in 1979) and if it was off the road at that time it would have missed the deadline that DVLA had set. So looks like the new owner will need to apply for a new 'age related' number. (Job for Colin!)
Mark has not said how he found the bike or who previous owner was, looks like it may have been a deceased relation, maybe who had stored the bike away all those years ago with the intention to restore it in retirement, but never got round to it.
Good news it it looks fairly complete and original, so should be an easy restoration, or just get it running and ride as an oily rag job. Lots of patina!!
Mark looks happy with his acquisition
