  • AjS Stormer Starmaker

I am getting an ME24 back together. It came without original engine. The correct engine is a Villiers Starmaker.
Have not been able to find one.
Can anyone advise if the AJS Stormer Starmaker engine will fit ie has the same engine mounting dimensions and chain alignment for engine sprocket to rear wheel ?

Villiers Starmaker Engine Info (Post 1 of 2.)

    Hi Dave,

Although I sadly cannot answer your question directly, I can offer you the following info on the Villiers Starmaker engine. I hope that you and fellow GRA/forum members may find this material of interest.

I will spread it over two posts due to the number of scans (see attached.)

The first item is an analysis of the engine published in 'Motor Cycle' (December 21 1963), and contains some excellent info, not to mention more of those wonderful period pen and ink drawings (any excuse to post more of those!)

    More to follow....

    Brian.

Villiers Starmaker Engine Info (Post 2 of 2.)

Finally Dave, here is a scan of a contemporary Norton Villiers Triumph catalogue which includes details and specifications of the Starmaker engine (see attached.)

Hope you will find this material of some use/help.

Good luck with your ME project, and hopefully another member may be able to address your question more helpfully.

      Brian.

        Same just different

Basically, it is the same engine. AJS, and it's top development engineer, Peter Inchley, took the engine and gearbox further than Villiers. An ME barrel and head are coarsely finned compared to the Stormer. Fit a decent self generating ignition and enjoy. A good expansion chamber will help extract to most power as will a big carb.

            Heresy i tell you

With experience of making the YZ 250 F (2 stroke) go you could try a half decent compression ratio. A 40mm Mikuni, and running on 50/50 pump gas/av gas. Hang on.......

There are one or two people in the Pre-65 club who can make the Starmaker/ Stormer fly. Well worth contacting.

                      Greeves Starmaker

I have attached two photos of my 24MDS Greeves that is fitted with a Starmaker motor.
Perhaps they will be of assistance for your rebuild.

That is rather nice indeed! I like the pipe, and I bet it runs better with a concentric than 2 monoblocs!

Service-Shop Lore #32 Villiers Starmaker - Motor Cycle Magazine, 9/12/65.

Following on from the scans I posted earlier in this thread, a further dig through my files has unearthed the following article, from the 'Work-Shop Lore' series published in Motor Cycle magazine.

I rode one with two monoblocks and my wrist was not strong enough to keep the throttle open for four laps.

                              Got the engine

Thanks for all the advice and pictures. I went up to Birmingham just before Christmas and came back with an engine construction kit/jigsaw puzzle! The guy had lots of Stormer Stamaker parts and best of all a complete bottom end and gearbox. Also got clutch, carb. Looks like its about 95% there, just missing some fastenings and clutch actuating part. It sits well in the engine cradle of the 24ME. Have been in touch with AJS at Andover and now have wall chart for engine and gearbox. Spoke with their Starmaker specialist. He was very helpful so have high hopes that missing parts should be easy to get from them. Hope to get underway this weekend!
Exhaust system will be an interesting project, but made a point of inviting relative who is a welder over for lunch... family can be very handy!
