Just thought I would say hello,

I recently sold My Norton Commando and decided not to buy anymore bikes.

So the next day I ended up with a Greeves 24tds after a late night on a well known auction site

I have to admit to not knowing anything about them other than I have always liked my 2 strokes and was intrigued by the front suspension - there you go that was enough for me !

I have many questions, especially about the Amal carb but I will start another thread if I cant find out the answer using search

    thanks

Hello and welcome. plenty of help (some useful, some tongue-in-cheek) on here, feel free to ask. There are more topics available to GRA members, so it would be worthwhile considering joining the club.

A 24TDS would be just the thing for getting about the farm - assuming from your handle that you have one..!

Originally it would have had a Villiers S25 carburettor, so maybe you can side-step your concerns about the Amal?

Farm boy, is it this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/motorcycle...sAAOSwENxXlUaz
as that had a 389 (1 1/8") Amal Monobloc carb & 34A scrambles barrel on it. Would be OK for blasting around the farm or green laneing but too peaky for trials. The Villiers S25 would do the trick giving you better bottom end but with a bit more top end than the standard 32A barrel. You would need to make or buy an adapter for an S25 as its clip fitting as against flange on the Amal. You could fit a Amal Mk1 Concentric 626 (26mm) as fitted on the 24THS & TGS Anglian.

            No it wasnt that one.

I have joined the GRA last night, well at least I think I have

Having no choke on my AMAL 626 means that it takes about 3 minutes to get it started, it gives a little spurt then a bit more then a bit more then away she goes, runs nicely after that and starts first kick everytime after its warmed up.

She is running a bit fluffy and boggy at various stages during riding but I reckon it just needs a bit of fettling on the road to get it sorted.

When I first checked the carb, I cleaned it thoroughly and removed to check the jets, I noticed that the air screw was completely closed off, so I have it 3/4 of a turn out as it seems to run better when warm.

Used as my summer commuter about twice a week across the back roads for 10 miles, Bike is running road gearing so I pootle along at 45-50mph downwind .

                Thats more like it

Just trying to figure out the best way of stopping the engine, their must be a better way than stalling it in first gear. I noticed the fuse on the top of the engine and thought you must just pull it to stop the engine, i thought wrong

You need to wire up a kill button, see this thread, someone else has asked same question.
Greeves trials models, e.g. Scottish, Scottish Twin, Anglian, Pathfinder, Wessex, Scottish Special, ISDT machines.

The trials bikes as built did not have a tick over, (the standard S25 carb fitted to trials models did not have an idle screw) so a kill button was not fitted, always a good idea though in case the throttle jams.

Tried in vain with the kill switch,

Firstly there are no points behind my cover, traced the single red wire up to a little black box hidden neatly under the tank.

Red and blue wire in and a white unused one coming out - possibly for a light ??

Fitted kill swith to the red but it just arced across no matter what I tried, I might need a different kill switch as the Apico MX one I tried was no good.

Got my speedo working tough which was a bonus, might need a new speedo cable though as I had to semi bodge the one already on, but it works for now.

Any ideas where best to get a new speedo cable for the 24TDS ?

If its a two terminal cdi unit you have under the tank, its usually the larger terminal of the two that you connect your kill switch wire to, just piggyback it onto the large terminal,
The kill switches only purpose is to send the wire to earth when pushed.

Well i tried every combination and I just ended up with either it arcing at the kill switch when I kicked it over, or it wouldnt start at all, or I got a nice little shock.

That was about the only results I got, after an hours of messing about I did manage to rig up another switch as a temporary measure which did work ok, so it looks like the Apico push button switch I had was allowing the spark to arc across the switch.

Will try again with another switch when I find a more suitable one.
