  • Another daft question

I have another dumb question, but I can't find a mention it in previous threads. Does anyone know what material tubing Greeves used on the Silverstone subframes? I thought Reynolds 531, but I may be deluding myself.

Kevin, According to Derek Pickard, British 250 Racer, frame and forks were Reynold 531 tubing. Colin

      Tube

When Greeves used 531 it was a British product. Not so nowadays.

Plenty of good equivalents if you are thinking of going into production. Look for cold drawn seamless thin wall.

I'm not planning any production, just the repair of some old frames. The local expert says he wants to mig weld them, which is a bad idea if it's 531. You're right, clearly the tubing available nowadays welds just fine.

That would explain the bronze "welding" used on the Silverstones as I believe this is the required method for 531.
