  • Yamaha XT600 Greeves

Went to have a look at this XT600 enginee Greeves special today which has been built by a local VMCC member.
The frame is from a 24SCS (61/1962) it retains the LL forks but has a completely new bespoke swinging arm, the rest of it is from bits acquired from eBay, hubs from a Honda with TLS front, engine is a four valve twin port XT600 (595cc) the tank from a Suzuki Maurauder & seat Royal Enfield.
The builder chose to be totally legal & re registered it with DVLA as a BMC Special (BMC is the owners initials by the way, & no parts from a BMC Allegro were used) This involved going through a lengthy & time consuming Single Vehicle Approval route hence the Q plate. The DVLA also issued a new 17 digit frame number Q897CGU XT600 engined Greeves frame number DVLASWA3971512008 so the original Greeves one is not used.
    Pics attached
(John H if you want to use this piece & pics for LL that's fine by me)

And why not i say, a good reliable engine fitted and finished off very neatly, this thing is quite common now, we have down here in our local club an Ariel square four with a 5oo Hond twin engine being used, it is interesting to see how innovative some people are

I agree Dick, no complete Greeves was broken up as the frame (bent) & forks were bought from an autojumbler. The owner previously had a Vincent Comet which he had difficulty starting due to bad knees, the Yam engine has an electric starter. In some aspects you can see a similarity with the Vincent.
The only downside is that Q plate, you dont get free Historic Tax with those, some people had advised the builder to just register it as a Greeves but he was not happy that the insurance would be valid with all the modifications. A good point.

Winning bid:£780 plus 8% commission pus VAT (£850)
That is a very low price for a restored, on the road bike, I think it reflects that Greeves hybrids are not in demand. Though to be fair this one had very few Greeves parts only main frame and forks. The fact that it had been re registered as a BMC with DVLA issued frame number and a Q plate will not have helped.

Now being advertised on Facebook by John Taylor, for £12345 presumably he bought it in the Cheffins auction for £850 and is now looking to make a killing. It is of course a 24SCS main frame not a 25DC

If you thought that the XT600 (Q897CGU) was an abortion, how about this SR500 'custom' with LL forks (from a Challenger according to seller) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-sr...kAAOSwBLJdyDcU

I bet the handling is exciting if not twitchy looking at the fork angle. I would love to know how it is tax and MOT exempt, it is a 1979 T reg which will not be eligible until April next year. Dogsbody

Seems to have had a continual MoT pass rate, but currently out of MoT. I wonder if the conversion has been made since last MoT

He says low mileage backed by MOT history. How come it was 42000miles now 17000? So fast it went back in time? Dogsbody
