Hi can some one please give me some help I have a 1958 greeves hawkstone with what looks like a 9E its a 250 fitted with a very short flattened open exhaust the head has 32A stamped on the underside also a T hand stamped on the serial no plate it has plenty of compression i have fitted electronic ign because it is so hard to start and a new concentric carb it hasn't made any difference really still hard to start not stiff just wont start there is a spark and plenty of compression you can kick it forever then all of a sudden it will go have checked timing also had my friend check to make sure it was right it is when i take the head of there dosent seem to be much fuel up the top, piston top not wet nor plug really are there any crank case seals if so how do i replace them i cant kick it over myself as i am disabled so have to get my friend to do it (he is a lot younger than me) such a simple engine why wont it go prior to my getting it it was laid up for many years i would be grateful for any help here thanks a lot barry

Fist principles.....are you sure that the fuel is getting to the carb? Are you tickling it and does fuel come out when you do? If the bike has been standing, the carb will almost certainly need cleaning and all the passages tested.
The crank seals are probably due for replacement, but the fact that no sign of fuel is getting to the top end is one of the first problems to deal with.

Have you tried draining the crankcase?

Could be a blocked pilot jet?

Stale petrol!! This modern rubbish goes off after a few weeks. Does it start OK after its warmed up? Also may be spark plug, a 'hard' one would be specified for racing, try a 'softer' one. like an NGK BP6HS

Hi guys and thanks for replies
no 1 the carb is a new amal concentric an id working ok
no 2 didnt know fuel could go of so fast never used to when i was a boy
no 3 dont think the jet could be blocked have filter in line and it has ran

but something i forgot is the crank shaft seals i never even gave them a thought the engine and frame has been hanging around for years un touched maybe they are leaking?

Even if the crank seals are past their best the engine should still run, albeit poorly

Seals are cheap & easy to replace on a single. one on drive side and one on the flywheel side fitted in the back plate that holds coils. Couple of hours work, you dont need to strip whole engine. Leaky seals will effect starting but ok when engine is running and crankcase pressure overcomes any leakage.

If you have fitted Electrex World ignition and the carb is not blocked, has the correct parts in it and the pilot is OK, it should be a good starter. My TES is anyway.

Check the c/case drainplug as was mentioned and carb.
