  • Competition Grips

    Good evening all…
Just a quickie enquiry, could anyone please tell me if they know if this style of competition grips are still available to purchase anywhere? (Photo 1).
I have searched several areas of the web site and magazines etc with no results so far.
There are plenty for sale with a similar grip layout but these include the donut shape to the thumb area and the small mushroom to the outer edge (Photo 2) I am looking if possible to find the original pattern.
    Thank you, Regards
    Sean

You could probably pick up a pair at the Stafford Show this weekend. Can't be too far for you. Call and in and meet the folks on the GRA stand.

      Plastic grips

I remember these grips from the 1960's they were a cheap and cheerful plastic grip sold by most dealers. Although they looked the business they were actually pretty useless, the plastic became slippery when wet, & the ribs caused blisters on your hands. They were never fitted as standard by Greeves, or any other manufacturer that I know of. Far better products around these days.

        Hi Sean,

Hope you and yours are keeping well.

As you say, the second type you describe are readily available (here; http://www.vmccshop.net/p/7387/kawas...grips-wassaell) but the one's you are after (the first type in your pics) seem to be a bit elusive these days.... If I find anything I'll post a link for you mate.

(I'm assuming you need 7/8" size, not 1".)

        All the best,

        Brian.

As John has said the best place for these are on a show bike , or in the dustbin, they slip out of your hands when wet and greasy , plus great for blisters as well, thank goodness that department moved forward ! ouch

Thank you all for your comments.

Colin: I think the Stafford Show would possibly be the best place to acquire a new set of these grips, but with other commitments on at the show weekend I will not be able to make it.

John: I bow to your superior knowledge regarding Greeves motorcycles and quite agree with you that with today’s modern materials there certainly are far better quality grips on the market.
But we must agree to disagree regarding the supply and fitting by Greeves of these cheap and cheerful plastic grips to some of the competition machines, for listed in the Greeves Illustrated Spares Catalogue are Part No: M7A/X122 – Ref: 17 - 7/8” P.V.C throttle replacement grip & Part No: M7A/X122 – Ref: 13 - 7/8” P.V.C. dummy grip.
Also on the Greeves MDS Technical Specifications leaflet, it is clearly written in the controls section the following, Heavy gauge handlebars fitted with latest pattern ultra-light nylon quick action twist grip throttle and P.V.C. comp grips.
Really it was and still is all down to individual choice on the type of grips preferred and how comfortable you feel with them. Pretty Useless? I don’t know about that, I think some riders found them OK and quite successful.

Hi Brian: Keeping very well thank you hope all is the same with you, sorry I should have stated they were to fit the 7/8” bars, (Thank you for the link if you come across one)
PS: Loved the brake shoes in your previous post, that cracked me up had me laughing for ages.

Dick F: I hope you wasn’t confiscating Badgers MDS at the AGM in an effort to condemn those dreaded grips to the dustbin? Good job you had a firm hold of it and it wasn’t raining.

              Grips

              Sean
Apologies for stating Greeves never fitted these grips, must admit I was thinking of trials & roadsters, & am surprised Greeves fitted them on some scrambles bikes, looks like they were cutting their costs & replacing the Doherty rubber grips.
These ribbed grips were available from most M/C dealers as an after market product, made by Britax I think, they used to have them on a card hanging up behind the counter. When we were young lads we used to buy them for our field bikes (old knackered roadsters cut down as scrambles or trials bikes). The same manufacturer (Britax?)also made a quick action nylon twist grip which we also bought to 'make our bikes go faster'.
But as I said (and Dick confirmed) they were pretty useless when they got covered in mud & became slippery. They also caused blisters if you wore thin gloves, and after a short time the fins used to split. OK if you are doing the bike to show & you want it to original spec, but no good for serious riding.
