  • Greeves Memorabilia, aka 'Greevesiana'!

John Wakefield's recent post regarding Greeves lapel badges on EBay prompted me to think of starting this thread, so nice one JW!

To get the ball rolling, I thought I'd post a couple of pics of my Greeves and Villiers badge collection. I've been on the lookout for the last five years or so and been fortunate to get hold of a few original and hard to find ones, with some being gifts from fellow GRA members. (Thank you gentlemen, you know who you are! ) It's a fun (and affordable...well, mostly!) thing to do, and I like to think it's another little bit of Greeves history preserved and enjoyed.

The 'Greeves Main Agent' sticker in the last pic is one of my prize finds. It was right at the bottom of an old box of stickers at an autojumble and in a bit of a state, but it cleaned up a treat as you can see. The seller took pity on me (!) and let me have it for 50p!!! I've never seen another, but I guess they must have been pretty common in the dealers back in the day.

Incidently, if anyone has a badge that I don't have in my collection (see pics) and would be happy to part with it (reasonable money please, it's just a bit of fun as far as I'm concerned!), or perhaps you may have a spare, then I'd be very happy to hear from you! (Please send me a PM if you do, and thanks!) I know there are still a good few out there to find, but I reckon it's a cracking collection as it stands and I'm really proud of it. They certainly make for a good conversation peice when we have visitors! Anyway, hope you like the pics.

So, has anyone else got any Greeves memorabilia to share with everyone here on the forum? I'm looking forward to seeing what other items people might have.

    Brian.

A couple of examples from the USA.

Here are a couple of examples from the USA, with the first being a sticker from my collection. It's a really nice item this, and of excellent quality. Printed on thick plastic it's more like a replacement tank badge and I really like the flamboyant treatment given to the typography. That 'glitter flake' background is so reminicient of that 70's SoCal 'vibe' (man!)

The second item is an image of an 'iron-on' t-shirt decal. Again, note the typography used (due to US trade mark/copyright issues perhaps?), and especially that helmet being worn by the rider, very similar to an American Football type! Think of Jack Nicholson's fantastic (and badly fitting!) gold version, pressed into pillion service in the film 'Easy Rider' for an example! I'll bet these were 'de-riguer' race wear for many riders back in the day, in the absence of anything more suitable, with the mouth-guard being just the ticket to ward off those pesky 'bomber flies' (see the film 'On Any Sunday'), varmints, cacti etc out in the desert!

Hope you enjoy looking at them.

    Brian.

      More 'Greevesiana'.

Here are some more examples of Greeves badges, another Key Ring and (I think) an 'original' '60's Tie Clip.

Sadly these items are not in my collection...yet!!! Still, it's good to know that there is still stuff out there to find!

        Here's a few more items!

        Here's a couple of nice patches that I'd like to add to my collection someday, and some nice banners from the USA. The later are available to buy on EBay and would look great in the garage! Here's a couple of links;

                More Greeves tshirts!

Here you go Kenny, here's a few more from me, as promised! Sorry about the creases, but Wendy doesn't allow me to use the iron anymore, not after what happened the last time.....!!!

The first two I designed myself utilising old Greeves factory artwork and my laptop, and were printed for me by a mate. The white design was a bit tricky to produce but I was really pleased with how it turned out on the blue background. I was wearing the white one (with the TCS brochure pic and spec) when Dicky Faggetter introduced me to Mike Jackson at the 2009 British Bike Bonanza Scramble, and it made my day when he commented on it and said he wanted one!!!

The third is the one that Lloyd Lingelbach produced to commemorate the 1965 USA ISDT team (I'm sure you'll recognise it!), and is a copy of the ones the team wore in the pic I attached as part of our chat in the 'Steve McQueen on a Greeves' thread (I've attached the pic again here for reference.) It's a nice item to have I reckon, and a great design!

                Brian.

                  Brian,

                  Very cool t-shirts!

Yes I have a couple of those USA versions, in fact my mom just handed one over to me that was my dad's...a special one indeed.

Glad you like them Kenny, and knew you'd have one of Lloyd's shirts! You must have one of Frank's 'Owners and Breeders' numbers as well I'll bet!

Seriously, it's great that you have one of your dad's old shirts-as you say it must be very special indeed.

All I have of my dad's now are some of his old tools, mostly big ('beast' kit!) and very old whitworth stuff, but with a few suitable sizes for the Greeves. I love using them all that I can and having them in my hands...it's a nice link to him and I know he would approve. He stamped his initials one every one ('WTH'), from his days as an electrical and mechanical engineer. My favourite is a lovely original big old 'King Dick' adjustable, the best ever made I reckon and still working perfectly after all these years!

Has anyone else got any nice Greeves memorabillia to share with us all on here then?! It can't just be me and Kenny that has stuff, surely...! It'd be great to see what others may have.

                    Brian.

                      Brian,

Just ain't going there on the "adjustable"!

I'll see what else I can dig up.

I dunno Kenny......there I go giving you some of my 'best' (ish!) material on 'tool envy' and set it all up nicely for you for a witty reply, and then you go and 'bottle out'...!!! Bet Colin won't hesitate though for a second though.....!!! (ha ha!)

Besides, that's what it's called....honest!!! And it's a genuine antique! It's not just that fancy 'Snap On' stuff that has a 'lifetime warranty' ya know!!!

Seriously though, it would be great to see some more Greeves memorabillia posted. I know that some of the lads have got some really interesting stuff and it'd be brilliant to see it on here!

                        Brian.

PS Apologies to Tammy for this dreadful display of 'bloke' humour (well, allegedly humour anyway!)....what will she think of me!
